nagarjuna bodhisattva is a charming ancestor. like many people, i always have nagarjuna bodhisattva in my heart. because the "mantra opening verse" before cundi mantra was written by nagarjuna bodhisattva, i prefer to recite cundi mantra; because nagarjuna bodhisattva's great achievements and personal charm convince people, i value this dharma-treatment patriarch more. nagarjuna bodhisattva is the founder of mahayana buddhism and the founder of the madhyamaka school. the history of chinese and indian buddhism respects him as the "second generation of sakyamuni". chinese buddhism respects nagarjuna bodhisattva as the common ancestor of the eight sects.
how old has nagarjuna bodhisattva lived?
the 24th day of the seventh lunar month is the christmas day of nagarjuna bodhisattva. august 21, 2022 is july 24th again. when i saw an introduction to an article, i actually said that nagarjuna bodhisattva "has lived in the world for six hundred years to spread the dharma and benefit sentient beings." how many years did bodhisattva nagarjuna live in the world? various materials vary. some say they are 150 years old, some say they are 200 years old, and even 500 years old. the accuracy of these statements is difficult to tell the authenticity. at least one thing is certain, that is, bodhisattva nagarjuna is very old. if nagarjuna bodhisattva did not live a long life, there would not be so many statements.
nagarjuna's great contribution to buddhism also indirectly proves that nagarjuna's life is long, otherwise he would not have been able to fulfill his historical mission. bodhisattva nagarjuna first created the madhyamaka theory of emptiness, and began to precede mahayana buddhist thought. he widely created the "madhyamaka", "great wisdom treatise", "twelve gate treatises", "reply to the seventy empty treatises", "ten abstinence treatises", "ten abstinence treatises", "ten abstinence treatises", "ten abstinence treatises", and "bodhi cause treatises", and other major treatises, which are known as the "master of thousands of treatises". judging from the experience of people writing books today, it takes time to write so many classic masterpieces to be written and compiled after time.
the avatamsaka sutra of the great blessed buddha is the first sutra that the buddha preached specifically for bodhisattvas after he attained enlightenment. but this sutra was not in the "human world" at first, but was collected in the dragon palace. in the 2nd century ad, bodhisattva nagarjuna read this sutra in the dragon palace and realized the profoundness of buddhism. so he recited the shortest version and brought it to the human world. the eighty volumes of huayan sutra circulated in china are said to be just a small part of the huayan sutra compiled by nagarjuna bodhisattva.
